This city-owned park in Garretson, SD offers as much scenery as it does history. The powerful water of Split Rock Creek has carved out a deep, narrow canyon in the Sioux Quartzite rock. The cliffs are impressive and offer unique formations like Devil’s Kitchen and Devil’s Stairway. Legend has it, Jesse James convinced his horse to leap over the ravine to avoid capture in 1876. While there are some holes in the story, it’s a local favorite to tell. Today you’ll find an iron footbridge where the supposed leap occurred. Whether or not the story is true, the formations you’ll find are reason enough for a visit.
