These Sioux quartzite outcroppings are located along the James River south of Alexandria. This secondary outcropping site is the western edge of Sioux quartzite country. The quartzite was used for foundations on a number of buildings in Fort James including a cavalry fort that was the only stone cavalry fort of its time.
